Divorced parents, walking down
the isle
Q.
Is it appropriate for the
bride to have her divorce dad and mother walk her down the
isle. They have been divorced 20 years and the dad has been
remarried for 16 years. The dad is not happy about it and the
step mom has had a very good relationship with her step
daughter. She is uncomfortable having her husband walk down
the isle with his ex-wife.
A.
This is an issue that
you need to let your parents decide. If they would not
feel comfortable walking down the aisle together, even to
show joint support for you, then don't ask them to do it.
I had a couple earlier this month that walked their
daughter down the aisle together. They have been divorced
for over 20 years, but have maintained a good relationship
because of their daughter. The dad has been remarried for
many years and has 6 children from his 2nd marriage. The
mom remarried only 3 years ago. All of the bride's
younger siblings were included in the wedding in some
manner, right down to the 3 year old. The mom and the
step-mom have an excellent relationship also. If this is
not the case with your family, then have your dad walk you
down the aisle and let your mother be the traditional
mother of the bride who is seated just before the wedding
party enters.
Have you considered how your
parents will be seated during the ceremony? If they
aren't comfortable walking together, they may not be
comfortable sitting together either. In that case, the
mother of the bride sits in the front pew or row on the
aisle and the dad and step-mother would sit behind her in
the second pew or row. The grandparents can sit with the
mom.
I hope this helps. If you
have other questions, please write again.
