My wife Amy and I had been dating for 9 months when I decided to ask her to be my wife. I have always wanted to make my proposal huge! So the wheels in my head started turning.

I knew before I could ask for her hand, I had to do two things. First, she had to meet my mom (this would have been easy except that she lived in New York and we were in South Carolina). Second I had to get her parents blessing and they lived in Connecticut!

Over Thanksgiving we went to NY and my mom gave her approval. Then as we were flying home I got the idea. She was graduating from college in December and her parents were coming down for the ceremony. They had also bought tickets to the Radio City Christmas show starring the Rockettes as a graduation gift. I thought how great it would be to propose on stage at the show. The only problem was that they didn't get me a ticket! They had bought the tickets back in March when we were first going out and Amy told her parents that we  wouldn't be going out that long.

In an effort to make an already long story short, I'll summarize. I still had to get a ring and I had no money to spend so my mom sent me down her ring from my father, her first husband. Now I had the ring, I had Mom's approval, all I needed was her parents blessing (and to set things up with the Palace Theater).

Now it's Friday night, the night of the show, and Amy is on her way to the show with her parents. I had spoke to them the night before and they had given their blessing and knew of my plans. As the show started the MC came out on stage and welcomed everyone to the show.

Then he told them that the city had just picked their man of the year and that they had the privilege of presenting the award (keep in mind that Amy still thinks that I am at home upset that I wasn't invited). Just then the announcer says please help me welcome the man of the year, Joe Rochel.

Amy now is nervous, because she knew that I wasn't man of the year but thought that I had done something for her graduation. The MC then asks her to give me the award. Her parents push her on stage and then the mc gives me the microphone. I take her hand and say; "My gift of heaven, how blessed am I, to spend even a moment, with you by my side. Too precious for words is our time spent together, my petition is quite simple, let's make it forever. With that I gave her the ring and got down on one knee and said, "Dear Jesus I pray, as on one knee I lay, be with me today, these four words help me say. Amy my love with all sincerity and laughter, say that you'll be my happily ever after!"

Then she said yes and they brought out a dozen long stem roses and all 2700 people in the audience stood up and cheered.
