It was mid April and my boyfriend John and I had been dating for two years. We met on top of a cliff at a lookout platform in Pennsylvania. There he bumped into me made me drop my very expensive camera got my address and promised to mail me a new one. A couple weeks later there was a new camera the same model arriving at my door from UPS. After that one conversation led to another and we fell in love. Well two years later we returned to this cliff. We got on the trolley that took us up to the top to the same look out platform that we met on. There near the ledge after a few minutes of reminiscing the "first sighting" of each other he knelt down on one knee and said "Julie I love you I want to spend the rest of my life with you please say you'll marry me? I promise not to make you drop your camera this time." As he was saying this he pulled out a jewelry box from his pocket and opened it up. Inside was the most beautiful dark blue sapphire ring surrounded by tiny little diamonds on a silver band (I'm allergic to gold). As he began to take it out of the box the ring seemed to be wedged in the little slit tighter than he thought. However he got it out and as he was holding my hand and i could feel that his hands were trembling. He opened his mouth repeating the words as he was trying to put the ring on my finger "Will you marr....." and all of the sudden the world was silent and the only thing heard was a "clink clink clink" and the tossle of some leaves on a bush. Before I realized what was happening John jumps out and runs over to the balcony and peers over the edge. The poor boy had dropped the ring and it rolled over the ledge down into the bushes below. Oh gosh I thought we're on a cliff. But the area underneath the plateform was more like an extremely sttep hill covered with bushes. We ran over to the guard that was guarding the gate that enclosed the platform and begged "Please sir please let us out into the hill. We've dropped an engagement ring over the ledge and we need to go look for it." And the guard he said "I'm sorry I can't let you go do that no one is allowed to go beyond the gate." And we asked "But sir please! It's an engagement ring! Please let us go find it! It was an accident." And still the guard said "I'm sorry I can't open these gates for you." Then some bystanders who I assume saw the whole thing came over to us and asked what was the matter and we told them what happened and how the guard wouldn't let us out. Then a woman from the group walked over to the guard and said "Would you please let them go find the ring? If you won't do it for regulation purposes would you at least do it for love? These two people are in love!" And yet again the guard said "I'm sorry I can't do that. My wife died a 10 years ago and ever since then I haven't felt love." And the woman enraged says "Well you old coot! Just because you're wife died and you're miserable doesn't mean you have to go and ruin it for someone else! You at least had the chance and got married!" And so the guard finally yet reluctantly opened the gate and allowed us to go search for the ring. Unfortunately we never found it but it was insured and we got it replaced.
