Do you have any ideas for a reading for our 12 year old son?

Deciding on readings is always a very personal thing.  What one person
feels is inspiring, another might find trite or mushy or insincere.

When blending families and including children, even more variables come
into play because of the individual feelings, relationships, attitudes
and circumstances involved.

Sometimes, people plan more juvenile readings for children, but for a 12
year old boy, I think the reading should be relatively short, but
definitely a serious part of the ceremony. A 12 year old knows what
marriage means-- to him and to you.

I get questions similar to yours quite often, but as yet, I've not found
a lot of poems or readings I feel are exceptional for this situation.
The one below is nice.  Clear, concise but with feeling.  Easy to read
and understand.  Obviously written about an existing family, not a new
family beginning, but still suitable I think.

Our Family
Author Unknown

Our family is a circle of love and strength.
With every birth and every union, the circle grows.
Every joy shared adds more love.
Every obstacle faced together makes the circle stronger.

This one also had potential to be applied to a family-- although it
might be better used from you to your future stepson than from him to
both of you.  You might want to cut out some portions, but it has some
good passages about unconditional love and commitment-- which are the
essence of family after all.

I Will Be Here
Steven Curtis Chapman

If in the morning when you wake,
If the sun does not appear,
I will be here.
If in the dark we lose sight of love,
Hold my hand and have no fear,
I will be here.
I will be here,
When you feel like being quiet,
When you need to speak your mind I will listen.
Through the winning, losing, and trying we'll be together,
And I will be here.
If in the morning when you wake,
If the future is unclear,
I will be here.
As sure as seasons were made for change,
Our lifetimes were made for years,
I will be here.
I will be here,
And you can cry on my shoulder,
When the mirror tells us we're older.
I will hold you, to watch you grow in beauty,
And tell you all the things you are to me.
We'll be together and I will be here.
I will be true to the promises I've made,
To you and to the one who gave you to me.
I will be here.

I would suggest that you also consider some of the  other, more
traditional passages about love, life or commitment.

The first that came to my mind as very appropriate for a "third person"
reading (as opposed to something you might say to one another) is The
Beatitudes from the Bible (Love is patient, love is kind... )   I can
envision a young man reading that and it being quite moving.  Corinthians 13 is another Bible passage often quoted for weddings which might be appropriate.
