Q.
Please tell
me the reason or significance behind a train on a wedding
dress. Is it appropriate for a second wedding?
A.
I have to say,
even with years of fashion history studies and bridal
experience, I don't personally know of any traditional
significance for a bridal train. My assumption has always
been that a train is traditional because in many eras of
fashion, the fanciest, most formal, most awe-inspiring gowns
were those with trains. It also lends that feeling of
"royalty" that brides have loved for ages.
I tried to research this on-line briefly just now, and found
one article that indicated that, at one time, the length and
opulence of a bride's train was supposed to show how
prosperous and important the wedding was.
However, the page was corrupted, and I was not able to find
the additional information about when/how that began.
At any rate, in modern weddings, the train is only one more
fancy formal *fashion* detail you can choose to wear or
not. There is
no restriction against a second-time bride wearing a train
for a relatively formal second wedding. I think it's most
important that you
consider the appropriateness of that style element in
relation to the wedding atmosphere and formality.
Second marriage traditions vary a great deal depending on
your region, social circle, and the specific circumstances
of the bride and groom. Some second weddings are large and
grand; others are small and intimate.
