I had never heard of a married couple serving
as god parents of the couple getting married until recently. Is this a
tradition in the Orthodox Episcopal Church?
I haven't heard of god parents being chosen by a
couple marrying in the Episcopal church, but there is a Spanish custom of
choosing one or more padrones for a wedding. A padrone is a person who has
had a significant influence in the bride or groom's life and who is willing to
publicly commit to being a continued influence in their lives, much like a god
parent of a child. Perhaps this is what you witnessed.
Recognizing padrones can be a meaningful addition
to a wedding ceremony. It indicates that the couple recognize their need for
guidance and wisdom from an older person or couple and that they are willing
to come to the padrone in times of need and learn from them.
I hope this helps.
