Q. my good friend is getting married, she is going to have her sister as her maid of honor and also another friend as the matron of honor. one standing on each side. I advised her that it is not proper etiquette. it should be either one or the other. am I correct?

A. What your friend plans to do is currently very popular, particularly when a bride feels that she would otherwise have to choose between family (her sister) and a close friend and risk offending someone in the process.

However, she shouldn't have one standing on either side of her during the ceremony, since that will interfere with the place of the best man.  She should choose one to stand next to her during the ceremony, one to sign the marriage license, and one to give a toast at the reception.  There will also be other duties that she can split between the two ladies so that they both share the honors.
