Q. What is the Maid of Honor supposed to do. I live in NY and the bride and groom live in South Carolina... Am I still suppose to do all the things that a Maid of Honor does? I can't afford to fly there that much (and my friend doesn't have ANY friends there that she can make Bridesmaids let alone Maid of Honor).

A. Though you probably wish that you could be more involved in the wedding, when a bride chooses a maid of honor who doesn't live nearby, she can't expect you to help her in the same way that you would if you lived in the same town.  Therefore, be available to chat with her by phone and e-mail and to encourage her during the planning process.  If you can arrive a few days before the wedding, you can help with last minute details.  On the day of the rehearsal, be available to help as needed, and the same on the wedding day.  You might ask the bride if she wants you to give a toast at the reception. If so, then begin thinking about that.

Over all, just be as supportive as you can be from a long distance.
