Q. I have just been asked to be the Maid of Honor in my best friends wedding that is expected to have more then 250 people at the wedding.  4 brides maids.  How much money should I expect to be spending on this?

A. This is something that you will need to discuss with the bride, since every bride and every wedding is different.  At the minimum, she will probably expect you to purchase your own dress and shoes and possibly the jewelry, if she doesn't give it to you as a gift.

You may decide to give her a shower or to co-host one with one or more of the bridesmaids or other friends, though you do not have to do this (contrary to what some brides may tell you).  It does not have to be an extravagant party, but the cost of invitations, postage, paper plates and napkins and food does add up, and don't forget a gift.

Your friend may also want you to plan a bachelorette party and if you aren't careful, that can really get spendy.  Consider a pajama party or a pizza party - nothing racy or controversial.

As you can see, it can get expensive quickly.  You could easily have over $1,000 invested if you and your friend aren't careful.  The best thing to do is to decide in advance how much you can afford to spend for the wedding, then let your friend know that you don't want to be cheap, but you are on a budget and this is all that you can spend.  There may be occasions when you need to be the voice of reason.
