Q. My cousin is getting married and I am her maid of honor. Her bachelorette party is Friday and I was wondering what exactly am I expected to do for the wedding and everything.

A. I'm surprised that your cousin hasn't yet told you what she expects you to do or how you can help her. In the months and weeks leading up to the wedding, the maid of honor generally helps the bride in whatever way the bride needs. The day before the wedding, you will be expected to attend the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner.

On the wedding day, you should arrive early to help the bride dress and be ready for pictures. When the ceremony starts, you will walk in after the last bridesmaid and before the bride. You may be asked to hold the groom's ring (place it on your thumb). During the ceremony, you will hold the bride's bouquet and you may need to fluff her train. At the end of the ceremony, you will walk out with the best man.

You will sign the marriage license at some point on the wedding day.

At the reception, you may be asked to give a toast, so be prepared. You might ask your cousin if she has any other things that she especially wants you to help with.
