Addressing the inner envelope
|
Q.
When addressing the inner envelope of someone named Mr. Joe
Smith III (or senior or junior) does the inner envelope have
Mr. Smith III, or Mr. Smith, Jr., or Mr. Smith, Sr. or just
Mr. Smith and when he is married is it Mr. and Mrs. Smith
III? This is a confusing part of addressing for me
A.
In years past,
the inner envelope was addressed very
formally. Today, however, the inner envelope
is addressed in a more personal manner, using
the term that you typically call the person.
Therefore, if Mr. Smith is a relative, the
inner envelope would say, "Uncle Joe and Aunt
Mary." If he/she is a friend, the envelope
would say "Joe and Mary." If he/she are
associates that you only know slightly, then
you can say "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," but don't use
the Jr., Sr. or other titles.
