It is etiquette to allow the bride's mother to purchase her gown first, then the groom's mother takes her cue from the color and formality of the bride's mother's gown.  Sometimes, however, the mother of the groom finds just the right dress first.  In that case, it would be courteous to let the groom's mother know that she found a dress and run it by her for color and style.
