I'm planning a wedding for next summer, and we want to have citrus
colors. Fore example, in my bouquet, I would like to have yellow
lilies and orange gerbera daises. Can you recommend some
bridesmaid dress colors? I'm not going to ask them to wear orange!
All three women have dark hair and pale skin.
The first idea that comes to mind
is to look at some of the pretty soft
greens that are available from companies like Bill Levkoff,
Occasions,
Bari-Jay, and Watters and Watters. If the maids' have a warm,
ivory
complexion look for shades like celery, with a little more yellow.
Cool, pinkish complexions will be flattered more by a silverier
sage.
There are also some pretty spearmints and icey limes available
too, but
choose carefully. Some companies like Alyce are showing true lime
gowns which, frankly, aren't that flattering on anybody. : )
I think the soft green would provide a soft, but harmonious
background
for your yellows and oranges. It also isn't that far off the
citrus
theme, since green is a big part of the citrus look (although it's
usually a stronger green).
Another possibility is to use a soft banana or butter cream
yellow.
Jessica McClintock and David's Bridal are among the companies that
offer
such a shade. Some fair women can wear these yellows, some can't.
So
see if you can find a sample to try. It gives you continuity with
your
citrus theme, but is not like "wearing orange dresses'. <g>
You could also consider using white or ivory (which ever you will
wear)
for the maids as well. Some people don't approve of anyone but
the
bride wearing white, but you can decide if that tradition means
anything
to you. All white gowns with your bright, vibrant citrus colors
would
be a very fresh, clean look--- especially if your florist uses
lots of
bright green foliage, too.
Some other possibilities you could at least look at include:
Jim Hjelm has a soft turquoise/aqua that is cool and clean and
subtle.
It's not citrus, but might compliment those colors.
Alfred Angelo and a couple other companies have some very light
violet
and orchid shades that could be a complimentary background as
well.
David's Bridal carries a coral that might be a compromise between
the
yellows and oranges.
Without seeing the maids, it's hard to suggest which shades will
flatter
them. Do try to take them shopping, if possible, and see how they
look
in the different shades. Sometimes a color you wouldn't normally
wear
really does look flattering-- but watch the differences in the
undertones, as I mentioned for celery and sage.
Good luck with all your plans, and happy shopping.
