The Proper Time for engagement party

When is the proper time to have an Engagement Party? What is the etiquette on Engagement Parties, do you give gifts. If so, what types of gifts? Should you send a gift if you are not attending?

An engagement party is the first social event that occurs after a couple becomes engaged.  It usually occurs 4 to 6 months before the wedding or shortly after the engagement occurs.  It is hosted by either the bride's parents or the groom's parents.  You do not take gifts to the party; however, you may take or send a card if you wish.
