Writing your own
intercessions for Catholic Ceremonies

If you are having a
Roman Catholic wedding, one component will be the Prayer of the
Faithful (also known as General Intercessions) During the Prayer of
the Faithful you make requests to the Lord Jesus Christ for needs
you wish to be fulfilled—such as “For those who are sick, let us
pray to the Lord”.
The Prayer of the Faithful is a time in the ceremony and in any Mass
when the world at large and all those within it takes great
precedence. When you meet with your Priest to plan your wedding, he
will provide you with standard Prayers of the Faithful to choose
from for your Mass. However, most Priest’s also give you the option
of writing your own Prayer of the Faithful.
For my fiancé and I, writing our own Prayer was important. We wanted
to write our own so we could make our nuptial Mass even more
personal and so we could pray for people and needs very close to our
heart.
Following is the template of the Prayer of the Faithful we
composed—typed just how it was read on that day. If you are writing
your own Prayer of the Faithful I hope ours will be a good guide for
you. Feel free to use any bits of it (or all of it) as you wish
(replacing specific names, of course, to fit your day)
Prayer of the Faithful
(Read by our best man)
Reader: The response is “Lord, hear our prayer.”
Reader: For Pope John Paul II, Bishop Howard Hubbard, Father Konopka,
Father Burns, and all clergy from all denominations world wide, that
they continue to lead believers to a deeper faith in God and a
stronger love of others. We pray to the Lord.
Congregation: Lord, hear our prayer
Reader: For Art and Caurie, that whether they are experiencing times
of happiness or heartache their love, commitment, and dedication
towards each other remains resolute and is used as a foundation to
help others. We pray to the Lord.
Congregation: Lord, hear our prayer
Reader: For the married couples among us who have been a source of
inspiration and encouragement in Caurie and Art’s own journey
towards marriage. May you continue to give; be able to forgive; and
find the love you hold for each other deepen with the dawn of each
new day. We pray to the Lord.
Reader: For all those gathered here today, that you may continue to
support Caurie and Art with your friendship and love throughout
their marriage and that you all have safe journeys home this evening
and always.
Congregation: Lord, hear our prayer
Reader: For all those who are sick in mind, body, or spirit, that
they are strengthened by God and aided by their fellow man. We pray
to the Lord.
Congregation: Lord, hear our prayer
Reader: For the loved ones of Caurie and Art who have gone before
them—especially Art’s father Dr. Bruce Burns; Caurie’s grandfather
Donald “Poppy” Miner, and her aunt Christine Anne Hackett—that they,
and all the deceased, find peace and the fulfillment of all their
unfulfilled desires. We pray to the Lord.
Congregation: Lord, hear our prayer
