We are having about 80 guests at our wedding.  How do I determine how many layers of wedding cake I'll need?
 

 

 
This is something that your baker can best advise you on.  Not every guest will eat cake, but I would rather be safe than sorry when deciding on the amount to order.  You will also want to consider what size cake will look good in your wedding pictures.  Generally, you need three tiers for good balance in your pictures.  If you choose round layers, they come in standard sizes of 6" (most often used for the top layer that you will keep), 8", 10", 12", 14" and 16".  For 80 guests, assuming that you will keep the top layer, you may want to choose a 10" layer and either a 12" or a 14" layer, depending on how much "ledge" you want on the bottom layer for decorating purposes. 
 
A good baker, and there are many people who bake cakes in their homes as a side business, will have pictures of cakes of the different sizes that they can show you.
