Surprise Bridal Shower Planning

Q. I am hosting a surprise bridal shower in my home for my sister. Many of the guests are coming in from out of town. What is an appropriate time of day to have guests arrive? How soon after should the bride arrive? And how far in advance of the party should invitations be mailed?

A. You don't mention whether the shower is on a Saturday or a week-day.  If it is a Saturday and guests will drive in that day, I would have it in the early afternoon so that guests can return home that evening without feeling rushed.  Some of them may want to get together for dinner later also.

I would have guests arrive about 20 minutes before the bride, unless you have family members who are always late.  They might be told to arrive even earlier so that they get there before the bride.

Send the invitations so that they arrive about two weeks before the shower.  If any of the guests will have to make special plans, ask for time off work, secure childcare, etc. you might let them know even earlier that you are planning a shower on a particular date and tell them that an invitation will follow.  That will help them to get an earlier start on their plans.
