I've been invited to a bridal shower

Q. I have been invited to a money bridal shower for a university friend that I see about once a year-if Im lucky.  She is Italian-I'm not sure if this is an Italian tradition or not.  I have never been to a money shower and find it very odd.  What is an appropriate amount to give??  She is also having a lingerie shower.

A. I have never heard of a money shower either, unless a specific large item has been picked out and guests are asked to contribute to the purchase.  From an etiquette point, it is considered rude to ask for money in place of gifts.  It is okay for a shower hostess to include a list of gift registries, which is not okay for the bride or groom to do, but it is stretching it to ask for money without a purpose.  It is up to you whether you feel comfortable attending such a shower or sending a gift.
