How to: Long Distance Showers

Q. Is there such a thing as a long-distance bridal shower? The bride is in one city, her parents are in another, and I (bridesmaid) am in another. Her sister (maid of honor) is in Hong Kong. Rest of bride's family and friends are all over the world. I would like to have a shower for the bride, but don't know how, with everyone in different parts of the world.

A. It is possible to have a long distance shower, but it involves some logistics.  Only close family and friends should be invited to a shower and it doesn't have to be a large group.  Have the shower in the location where most of the family or friends live.  This could mean that you have to travel and that you need a co-hostess in the chosen location. You will want to check with the bride to be sure that more than one shower isn't being planned for her, since guests (except moms and bridesmaids) should only be invited to attend one shower.

If you will be giving the only shower and want to include everyone, send special invitations to those who live in other places and ask them to send a card or a tape recorded message or some other form of communication.  If the bride likes to cook, they might send recipes that you put into a book for her.  Don't expect guests who live in other areas to mail gifts.  Some will, but many may not and they may not appreciate being put on the spot.

It will be a nice surprise to the bride to know that she has been remembered in a special way by so many people.
